How Mobile Job Search is on the Rise According to  CTIA, U.S. wireless consumers sent and received an average of six billion text messages per day, or, 69,635 text messages every second. The trade association also reports that as of December 2011, 34 percent of American households were wireless-only. In today’s world, mobile is our means of communication, the way we get information and how we stay current on the latest news locally and worldwide. While many people use mobile devices to send text messages, make calls, check in on Facebook, or do a number of other daily tasks, many also use mobile devices to help make career decisions. In a survey out today from  Glassdoor, 89 percent of employees who admit they’ll look for a new job in the next year say their mobile device is an important tool and resource for their job search. Plus, they’re not just turning to their mobile devices to look for  jobs  â€" more than half (54 percent) read  company reviews  from employees and 52 percent research  salary  information. Would You Take $25,000 to Quit Your Job What if your employer offered you cash to quit? Would you take it? If youre happy overall and feel connected to the company culture, maybe not. But if youre already feeling dissatisfied, wondering how to cover cash flow if you were to quit, such an offer could be very appealing. Which is exactly what Riot Games is trying to accomplish. The maker of the popular video game League of Legends  recently announced that theyll pay unhappy employees up to $25,000 to quit their job. In a post on Business Insider, the company explained that theyre seeking a way to prevent mismatch hires from festering. And to learn from those quickly discovered hiring mistakes. Theyre not the first company to go this route: Zappos  and Amazon both pay employees to quit, explaining that its a way to ensure that employees remain there for reasons beyond just the paycheck. With  Gallups  most recent figures on  employee engagement showing that over 70% of the US workforce is disengaged at work,  this strategy could work. And possibly recoup a lot of lost productivity dollars. But there are alternate views on the topic. In this post from TTI Sucess Insights, chairman Bill Bonnstetter states that these pay-to-quit strategies arent actually solving anything. He explains that Riot Games is treating the symptom and not the cause, pointing out that they could have the right person in the doors but merely in the wrong position. Bonnstetter recommends hiring right the first time via job benchmarking  and using validated assessments  to match a candidates attributes and behaviors to the jobs profile, the performance required, and the motivators involved. How to Find Candidates Social Networks Simply By Using Their Profile Picture Have you ever wondered what the easiest way is to find out the other social profiles for a specific candidate? Need to learn more about a candidate by reading their Twitter feed? Would you like to see where they check in on a regular basis via Foursquare? There are plenty of plugins that can aggregate profiles for you, but we can go into that another time. For now, I would like to show you a quick and simple trick to search for people using their profile avatar (profile picture) using, probably the most powerful aggregator out there, Google! For this trick you need to install and use Google Chrome (get it here). Once you have it open, lets install a very simple extension plugin called “Search by Image (by Google)” (get it here). Open the link and click “Add to Chrome” in the top right. Once it is installed, go to a LinkedIn profile. I have chosen Jorgen Sundberg, founder of this blog, as my example. A high percentage of people use the same profile avatar for multiple social networks and Jorgen is a good example of this practice. Right click on his profile picture and choose the newly installed plugin “Search Google with this image”: You will be taken to a Google Image search with the image as the search criteria: From this result you can see that we now have links to his Twitter page, LinkedIn profile, Google+, Facebook Profile, His Blog (This one) and his YouTube Channel. All with a single action! Footnotes: Results will vary depending on how active the candidate is and how often they use a single avatar as their profile picture obviously. With the release of Google Glass (coming soon!), Google have been re-indexing all images stored to give better facial recognition results. As you can see at the top of the Google results page, it says: “Best guess for this image:  Jorgen Sundberg” which tells me that Google are starting to store names associated to images or that facial recognition will start telling us who people’s faces are! The more excited you are about learning that skill, the more quickly you will acquire it.For example, as a Wannabe Blogger â€" I know it is important for me to learn some key Internet Marketing techniques such as Developing Landing Pages, A/B Testing ,etc.These are not mandatory skills, but important for me â€" to convert more of my visitors into repeat customers.However, I don’t necessarily enjoy that part. I purchased a 3 hour course on Creating Effective Landing Pages. But I could not get myself through the course. It felt like a chore. So I stopped learning how to make Landing Pages.The skill I enjoy the most is writing.It is exciting â€" it gets my juices flowing. I look forward to my weekends where I can get my unlimited refills of Starbucks coffee, and I can use that time to start posting articles.Hence, I spend most of my time on writing. It is a skill that I can improve heuristically â€" by trial-and-error the more I write the better I become.The challenge is fun. Speaking of Top Lists, todays post focuses on repairs and maintenance required to keep your job search on the road. What exactly does this mean? Things change and you need to keep all of your stuff up to date. Some things may not work as well as they used to (or maybe they are not working at all). So while you may think that your job search is in good shape, its always a good idea to get an oil change every few thousand miles or so. Resume Review: When was the last time you reviewed your resume? If it was more than 3 months ago, you are way overdue for a resume review. There are always the big things (like, did you get promoted, did your boss get promoted, did you get more responsibilities) which you really should capture as they happen. It is usually the small things you forget like, major accomplishments in the last few months or a new project. You should review your resume once per month (but certainly no longer than every three months) and revise it as necessary. == How Often Should You Update Your Resume? Review Your Job Search Marketing Plan: If there were no commercials for products, how would you know they existed? The same goes for your job search if know one knows you are looking for a job, how will anyone know to ask you to interview? If you dont already have a job search marketing plan, then now is the time to create one. If you already have a plan but are not getting much traction, now is the time to review and revise it. So what, exactly, is a job search marketing plan? It should include all of the companies where you would like to work, a list of recruiting firms you would like to work with and a list of all of your friends, family and acquaintances can help you find a job. == Why You Need a Job Search Marketing Toolkit Keep a List: Unless you are incredibly organized, Im willing to bet that you dont keep track of who youve contacted, where youve posted your resume, jobs youve applied for, etc. You need to keep an organized list of all of your activity otherwise you run the risk of applying twice or not updating key posted resumes. As with everything in life, there is a tool to help with this (it is called an organized list!). The list should include recruiters, anyone from your network that youve specifically contacted, places where your resume is posted (job search sites, company career sites, etc.). Take a look at the following template == Job Search Tracking Document Change Your Resources: If youve not been getting much activity on your resume (more on this next), you need think about using different resources. Start using different job search sites (but not more than 5), add additional companies to your list of targeted companies for job search and search out the friend of friends on LinkedIn. Also, review your plan of attack. How are you spending your time? Have you allocated time to each of your job search resources? Maybe its time to reevaluate and spend your time differently. == Spring Cleaning for Job Search Cover Letter Redo: You should have many versions of your cover letter. One for applying for specific jobs, one to introduce yourself to a recruiter, one to introduce yourself to a company and a generic cover letter for sites that require one. If you use one cover letter version for everything, start work on multiple versions. And, while Im on the topic, each your cover letters should be further personalized depending on what and where it is going. Is it Bad Etiquette to Ask For Another Job While Interviewing A lot of people will browse a company’s website and see if they have open jobs available, nothing wrong with that and some people will even apply to more than one job while on the page. Nothing wrong with that either. It’s when you get to the interview phase that things can become tricky. Job interviews never seem to get any easier â€" even if you have gone on more interviews than you can begin to count. You keep meeting new people, talking about yourself and what you offer, and sometimes getting the third degree from employers. But, what if you go into an interview for one job, but you know the company has something that would be a better fit for you? No one is going to go into an interview and start talking up the merits of one job versus another, but if you interview with a HR representative first it does give you the ability to mention other jobs you might be interested in. So, what can you do to show your interest for another job while interviewing? Practice makes Perfect During a usual interview, you may be sweating bullets about the questions or how you appear, but if you took the time to learn about the company and the open positions you are qualified for, you can converse intelligently about the open positions. Think of actual examples that you have used in the past that works well with the job you want. Providing evidence of past work in that field is a great way to shift focus towards other positions. Prepare for all Contingencies Prepare a response so that when you ask about other positions you have a quick response to why you are interested in that position. Make sure that you know about the company and the positions that are available. Try and relate your past experience with the skills needed for the other position, sometimes interviewers will know that you are not qualified for one position and will offer you others. Watch and Learn Look at what others have done to find a way to bring up other positions lightly. You do not want to go into the interview proclaiming how you are right for another position, the interviewer will not respect that position and it will damage your chances at either job. Get yourself Ready Make sure that you are dressed the part, no matter what part it is you’re applying for. Try and look neat, tidy and appropriate for any situation. Bring clean copies of your resume that highlight the relatable experience you have and bring a pen and pad for notes. Staying Calm During the job interview try to relax and stay calm, if you need a moment before the interview, take it. Now is the time to get your mind right for dominating the conversation and letting your desires be known. It may not work every time but if you can get yourself in an interview; you may be able to transition away from one position into interviewing for the one that is right for you.
